Basab Dasgupta has more than 20 years of experience of conducting research and evaluations
in the international development arena. He worked as a Senior Consultant/Economist at the
World Bank and as a Technical Director in the Impact Evaluation Division at Social Impact, a
global consulting firm. Basab has led, directed, and contributed to more than 25 research, and
evaluations funded by the USAID, MCC, DFID, and World Bank. His research and evaluations
include assessments of the development effectiveness of aid-funded assistance in the areas of
governance reforms and service deliveries, market-driven inclusive development, agriculture
and food security, poverty and inequality, and gender and social inclusion. He also spearheaded
research and evaluations in the areas of urbanization and firm productivity, housing subsidy,
sustainable infrastructure development, and economic growth.
As a Technical Director in Social Impact and Economist/Consultant at the World Bank, Basab
also provided ongoing guidance and support to home and field office teams in all areas of
evaluation, especially the development of evaluation plans, preparation and adaptation of
instruments, and data quality assurance (DQA). In addition to leading evaluations, he also
guided teams in business development, developing results frameworks; selecting of monitoring
and evaluation outcome indicators; and providing quality control for the studies.
Basab’s research and evaluation experience span countries such as Ethiopia, Nigeria, South
Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Somalia, Lesotho, Malawi, and Sierra Leone in Africa, Brazil, Honduras,
Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Guyana in Latin America & Caribbean region, Bangladesh, India,
Nepal, and Sri Lanka in South Asia region, Armenia, Kosovo, Latvia, Tajikistan and Turkey in
Europe and Central Asia region, China, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Vietnam in East Asia Pacific
and Palestine and Tunisia in Middle East & North Africa.
Basab earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Connecticut, USA, and his M.Phil in
Economics from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. Basab is also a certified
Data Science and Machine Learning specialist from MIT.
